Joining the executive committee

How to become part of the OAA executive committee.

The executive committee provides the OAA with its governance oversight and its strategic direction. For the OAA to continue to be a vibrant and relevant organisation it is essential that the executive committee is updated regularly with new elected members who bring fresh ideas, opinions and enthusiasm.

Vacancies on the committee become available each year as existing members complete their terms of office. There are usually between one and three vacancies each year and these are filled through annual elections ahead of the Annual General Meeting. On occasion the committee may also co-opt members to the committee.

How to join the executive committee

A Notice of Election calling for nominations is circulated to members by email not less than 70 days before the AGM.

To stand for election you need to send the following to the Honorary Secretary (with a copy to the OAA secretariat):

  • A short statement about who you are, why you want to join the OAA committee and what you will bring to the job.
  • A short CV
  • A photo of yourself

You need to be proposed and seconded by two ordinary members of the OAA.

Voting by the OAA membership takes place online and the results are announced at the AGM.

Being a member of the Executive Committee

As the OAA is a registered charity and a private limited company, committee members are both a trustee and a company officer with responsibilities for good governance of the OAA.

A committee member's term of office is three years. You are expected to attend the meetings of the committee, which usually occur three times a year and are held at the Association of Anaesthetists' premises in Portland Place. You will be involved in the work of the committee and also be expected to contribute to the work of the subcommittees and other OAA business. Travel expenses are provided for attendance at committee and subcommittee meetings.

Being a committee member can be professionally and personally rewarding and interesting, allowing you contribute to the development of our subspeciality.

If you want to know more about being a committee member, please send an email to the secretariat marked for the attention of the Honorary Secretary.
