General
The Fellowship in Obstetric Anesthesiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a 12-month program that starts on 1 July. The fellowship faculty is members of the Obstetric Anesthesia Section of the Department of Anesthesiology. Fellows will also interact with faculty from the Medical School’s Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology, Section of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The obstetric anesthesia faculty is dedicated to providing a well-rounded educational experience for anesthesiologists interested in a career in obstetric anesthesiology.
Fellows must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Illinois. The must be American College of Anesthesiology Board Certified or Eligible or the equivalent. International fellows must be ECFMG certified and hold the appropriate visa to work in the United States.
Clinical
Obstetric anesthesia fellows are expected to gain experience in advanced clinical care. The obstetric anesthesiology clinical service consists of medical students, anesthesiology residents, fellows and attendings. The service works closely with obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, and the obstetric nursing staff to provide care to both healthy and high-risk parturients. Fellows will help manage the clinical service and are expected to contribute to both formal and hands-on teaching of anesthesiology residents and medical students.
Hospital
Prentice Women's Hospital, a part of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, provides Level 3 maternity and neonatal care for over 12,500 deliveries per year in a state-of-the facility which opened in 2007. Northwestern Memorial Hospital serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
