General
This Obstetric Anaesthesia Research Fellowship is aimed at obstetric anaesthetists who wish to pursue an interest in biomedical research. It is intended to provide the successful applicant with the basic attributes underpinning a career in academic anaesthesia.
The fellow will have 2.5 days per week protected research time during which they will have no clinical commitments. 1 day per week will be spent working in the MSk lab at Imperial College London on a neurophysiology project with relevance to Obstetric Anaesthesia.
The remaining 1.5 days per week of research time will be spent in the Maternity Department at St Mary’s where the fellow will undertake a clinical research project of their choosing.
Clinical
This is not a clinical obstetric fellowship. For 1 day per week the successful applicant will provide anaesthesia with local supervision for a variety of elective and emergency lists at St Mary’s Hospital. In addition they will undertake a 1:7 resident on-call rota as a senior registrar with distant supervision. The out-of-hours work will include providing anaesthesia for emergency cases in theatre and anaesthetic support at trauma calls.
Hospital
Maternity Services at St Mary’s Hospital London is a busy department managing 4,500 births per year many of which are maternal high risk cases. The department is actively involved in obstetric research and the clinical and midwifery teams are experienced in the practicalities of carrying out research alongside day to day clinical activity.
