General
This post within the East Midlands Workforce Deanery involves six months of training on the maternity unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital. The fellow will be expected to teach relevant aspects of obstetric anaesthesia to other anaesthetists in training every week and supervise juniors in practical aspects of obstetric anaesthesia. There will be opportunities to run and participate in journal club, teach midwives, and take part in simulation training.
Involvement in research and audit relevant to obstetric anaesthesia, and delivering presentations locally, and at OAA annual meetings are encouraged.
Clinical
In addition to working on the labour ward, the fellow will also attend the weekly consultant-led antenatal anaesthetic clinic. It will be necessary to shadow obstetric and neonatal consultants and attend some antenatal clinics and neonatal wards to gain understanding of the management of various problems in pregnancy, labour and early life. On calls will be on the Senior SpR rota. It is likely that some of the complex cases will be outside the fellow’s normal working hours. Despite this, we will expect that the fellow would demonstrate their commitment by becoming involved with these cases when possible.
Hospital
The Leicester Royal Infirmary obstetric unit is a busy tertiary referral centre dealing with over 6,000 deliveries a year. There are 18.5 funded consultant obstetric anaesthetic sessions which consist of two consultant anaesthetists covering the delivery suite during the morning and one in the afternoon and an anaesthetic clinic which is held weekly.
