Hospital
Founded in 1745, the Rotunda is the oldest stand-alone maternity hospital in the world and the busiest maternity hospital in Europe. The department of anaesthesiology has 10 consultant anaesthetists and many trainee anaesthetic doctors caring for approximately 8,500 families per year. It is a tertiary referral centre for both complex maternal disease and fetal disease including in-utero fetal surgery, with well-developed multi-disciplinary pathways for the provision of care for these complex cases. Within Rotunda is the National Centre for Cardiac Disease in Pregnancy including both acquired and congenital maternal cardiac disease.
