General
During their year the Fellow will manage both routine and high risk deliveries, and elective and emergency caesarean deliveries. The fellow will consult in the high risk obstetric anaesthesia clinic, which involves formulating care plans for complex parturients.
Research is strongly encouraged at Mount Sinai Hospital. During their year, Fellows undertake at least one clinical research project and develop a protocol, obtain ethics approval, recruit participants, and are involved with ensuring accurate data collection and statistical analysis.
Clinical
Clinical time is spent mainly in obstetric anaesthesia, including elective Caesarean sections, emergency Caesarean sections, assisting with labour analgesia, anaesthesia consultations, and other duties as required. Remaining clinical time is spent in the general OR, providing anaesthesia services for general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, ENT, plastics, and a range of other surgical specialities.
One day a week is dedicated research time.
Hospital
Mount Sinai Hospital is an academic centre of excellence affiliated with the University of Toronto. The Obstetric Anaesthesia Fellowship offers advanced clinical training, teaching and research in a setting that delivers more than 6,500 women per year. This is a tertiary care hospital with an interesting and challenging case mix, and approximately half of our patients are classified as high risk. The Caesarean delivery rate is approximately 35%, while the epidural analgesia rate is about 85%.
