General
Fellows spend approximately 40% of the time on clinical research and 60% on clinical service. It is expected that a fellow will develop a protocol, obtain ethics approval, recruit subjects and be involved with ensuring accurate data collection and statistical analysis for their study. Ultimately, the results will be presented and submitted for publication.
Fellows will attend multidisciplinary meetings with specialists from Obstetric Internal Medicine, Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Cardiology. In addition, the fellow will be expected to present at least once at formal Multidisciplinary Grand Rounds during the fellowship year.
Clinical
The fellow will manage both routine and high-risk labours and deliveries, and elective and emergency caesarean deliveries. Fellows will initially be closely supervised by a consultant/staff anesthesiologist with the intent of taking on the full responsibilities of a consultant anesthesiologist. Additionally, the fellow will consult in our high risk obstetrical clinic which also involves devising care plans for very complex parturients. Fellows are expected to take on shifts including some resident nights.
Hospital
BC Women’s is the tertiary referral Women’s Hospital for the province of British Columbia. There are approximately 7,200 deliveries annually, about one third of which are “high risk” with a wide variety of obstetrical and medical complications. The current caesarean delivery rate is approximately 30% of which on third are scheduled as elective cases.
