Animal-based research is uncommon in obstetric anaesthesia. Projects involving animals will be considered if they are scientifically justified, ethical and legal. Where project methodology extends outside the expertise of the OAA Research & Grants Sub-committee, external expert peer-review will be sought. The project must have clear benefit to patients with results that cannot be obtained by other methods.
The OAA will only fund animal research that is conducted in accordance with Home Office legislation or equivalent. It must have been approved by an independent ethics committee and researchers must adhere to the ARRIVE guidelines.
