Medical student bursaries

Each year the OAA offers two UK Medical Student Travel Bursaries of up to £750 each for students undertaking an overseas undergraduate elective placement.

Applications are invited from medical students studying in the UK for funding towards a medical student elective undertaken as part of a medical degree. The elective placement must be approved by the medical school and should focus on obstetric anaesthesia.

The OAA will support a medical student elective placement which focuses on obstetric anaesthesia and which prepares students for a possible career in anaesthesia by developing an interest in the speciality. A project in obstetric anaesthesia should be proposed and carried out during the elective. Successful applicants are expected to provide a written report of their elective on their return to the UK.

Application for amounts up to £750 will be considered. Each application will be considered on its merits by the OAA Research and Grants Subcommittee. If more applications are received than there are bursaries available, applicants will be ranked in order of priority and, if appropriate, forwarded to the OAA Executive Committee for a final decision.

Applications should be made by email to Yavor Metodiev, Chair of the OAA Research and Grants Subcommittee. Applicants should include:

  • Personal details and Medical School information.
  • Details of visiting centre, dates of attendance and contact details of the supervising anaesthetist.
  • A description of experience to be gained and projects to be performed (500 words max).
  • Information about why this elective placement has been chosen (200 words max).
  • The amount of funding applied for (maximum £750) broken down into travel and accommodation.
  • Details of any other funding applications that have been made.
  • An undertaking to provide a written report of their elective period on their return.

Payment for travel and accommodation is by way of reimbursement on production of receipts and conditional on the applicant attending the whole meeting.
